I may have gone to bed angry, but the edge wore off quickly. I tucked in, just my small cat self on a rollout sleeping mattress, wondering when Grimm would finally come back inside. But my feline pride wouldn’t allow for me to go and get him, knowing that he was justified in the things he said.

Instead, I fell asleep from pure exhaustion, and had a similar dream to the previous night, where an unseen figure stalked me through the ancient woods, the path before me ending in whiteness. The humanoid shape loomed nearby once again, all but hidden by a barrier. It wanted in. It wanted me.

I awoke with a start, noting that the quality of light filtering through the white tent had shifted to an early morning dimness. If my eyes weren’t deceiving me, I had slept through the night. I stretched my legs, feeling a definite and unusual chill about my small body. It was an odd sensation, I realized, but I couldn’t pinpoint why. Not until I actually looked at my surroundings.

Grimm was absent.

His great body always kept me warm at night, like a black shaggy comforter. But there was no sign of him, not even a dent in the bedding to indicate he had been here.

My mind flipped to last night: the argument we had, his abrupt departure from the tent. I knew that directly after he and I parted ways, he had stationed himself outside of the structure, because I could hear him shuffling about near the doorway. He had still been there by the time exhaustion had pulled me under. But I also had expected him to come back inside halfway through the night. We always cuddled together. Besides, he knew I couldn’t stay mad at him for very long. He meant too much to me.

At least, I assumed he knew that.

I shimmered, regaining my human form to go and see if he was still asleep outside of the tent. Folding back the flaps, I poked my head out.

It was still decently dark, but the sky was gray with the beginnings of a gloomy fall day. It was more than enough light for me to scan my surroundings. And my eyes saw no sign of a shaggy black dog.

“Grimm?” I called out softly, hoping that he had simply wandered into the nearby trees to investigate something. I crawled out of the tent, hugging myself to keep the sudden chill from invading my body.

I called out a couple more times, but there was no response. After the fourth shout, I heard one of the MC doors open behind me.

I swiveled to face Nic as he got out of the vehicle. “Have you seen Grimm?” I asked without preamble.

Nic stopped short. “I assumed he was with you last night.”

I shook my head, fear beginning to grab ahold of my chest. “He … was restless last night. I think he was worried about more werewolves. He seemed to want to stand guard in front of the tent.
